MARSOL VTOL/EVTL Landing area fire protection system uses F-500 EA agent.
Most of the EVTOL under development and testing currently use Lithium-Ion battery for powering the electrical propulsion system.
F-500 EA is the answer to many of today’s firefighting challenges. In a world where fires have become hotter and more difficult to extinguish, F-500 Encapsulator Agent’s unique capabilities meet those challenges. First, F-500 EA has a remarkable ability to cool a fire and surrounding structures, with the ability to absorb 6-10 times more heat energy than plain water without the creation of super-heated steam. Secondly, F-500 EA forms Spherical Micelles or “chemical cocoons” that encapsulates fuels rendering them non-flammable and non-ignitable. Finally, F-500 EA interrupts the free radical chain reaction of the fire tetrahedron. This interruption results in greater visibility, reduced smoke and soot and most importantly a drastic reduction in toxins.

F-500 Encapsulator Agent is not a foam, so it contains no fluorinates ingredients, such as perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS). F-500 EA is 100% biodegradable and is non-hazardous, containing no ingredients reportable under the Superfund Amendments and Re-authorization Act (SARA) Title III, Section 313 or the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). Shelf life is 15 years and it can be discarded as a non-hazardous waste under RCRA CFR261.

These unique properties make F-500 Encapsulator Agent the most versatile firefighting agent available. Unlike foam which must form and maintain a perfect blanket to separate the fire from the oxygen, the F-500 EA Spherical Micelle technology encapsulates the fuel and vapours on a molecular level rendering them non-flammable. This makes F-500 EA the perfect solution for three-dimensional fires, plus F-500 EA is recommended for Class A, Class B (polar and nonpolar), Class K, Class D and Lithium-ion Battery fires. There’s no need to inventory Class A, AFFF and/or AR-AFFF foams and specialized agents for Class D fires. F-500 EA can do it all!

Marsol Approach

Since the lithium-ion battery packs are stored within the EVTOL battery storage compartment, it is not possible to reach such fire using a fixed fire extinguishing system from landing are unlike in helicopter landing area systems which use manual operated or automatic monitors or DIFF systems.
Marsol approach to this is using flexible hose reels with special pierce nozzle which can be interchangeable with jet nozzles during the initial spray, where the nozzles can spray solution on the EVTOL body to cool the surface allowing fire fighters to pierce the compartment using the special pierce nozzle and spray the F-500 EA solution inside the battery compartment thus extinguishing fire.
Currently there are no specific standards for design of fire fighting system for EVTOL landing area certified products for EVTOL landing area protection, Marsol proposes the F-500 EA which is tested in Kiwa Netherland lab which results show the F-500 EA is suitable for Lithium-ion battery fire when compared with foam and dry chemical power.

F-500 EA Self-Contained Skid

The self-contained system consists of ASME pressure vessel which contains pre-mixed water and F-500 EA agent. The system is driven by Nitrogen gas to propel the pre-mix solution through the hose reel. There is no external power or water supply required. Based on the project requirement the system can be connected to the external pull station for remote activation through electrical solenoid valves. The system is designed for 10minute discharge duration.

F-500 EA Standard Skid

The standard F-500 EA skid consists of F-500 EA storage tank, water motor piston pump and control valve. This system requires pressurized continues water supply and the water motor is capable of mixing F-500 EA agent based on the variable flow demand. The system can be connected with multiple hose reel units and can be operated individually or together based on the available water flowrates.
